Germs up close really does show you some interesting pictures of germs. It explains the types of germs and what illnesses they cause. This is a great book if you are learning about germs and health in school or even cells.

I would have recommended this to every science teacher and parent out there but sadly I can not.

I saw that toward the end of this book there was a real push for vaccines and it does have the Covid-19 virus in here. I think that is where it lost me. I do not get a flu shot every year either which is mentioned.

Then, there was then mention of masks to help the spread. That is not science. The science is that those masks are not going to work because the viruses are so small they can go through your mask and unless you have a properly sealed N95 or better mask then they won’t do you any good. Then, if those are not fitted properly they are useless as well. That is why they have fit test and even with those, not everyone will be fitted properly.

I think there could have been a mention of stay home when you are sick so that you do not get others sick. So many parents take their children to school, stores, parks,Chuck E. Cheese when they are sick. They use the excuse that they take them to school because everyone else lets their child. If everyone would stop spending their child, regardless of the next parents decision, then their child wouldn’t be passing it on to other children they come in contact with every day and hopefully won’t have it again the week after they get over it.

While there was mention of coughing into your arm to keep others from getting sick, there was a picture of two children bumping elbows instead of shaking hand but when you coughed into your arm I’m sure your elbow area was contaminated.

Anyway, that is enough of my rant. Overall I would give this book three stars. I would have given it 5 and am sad to say I can’t now.

I want to thank NetGalley and Millbrook Press for providing me this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
